CHAPTER 9

Stone returned mid-afternoon with a range of goods he’d purchased from different stalls and markets. He dropped these on one of the beds, and as Bess sat up, he said, “Have you come to a decision?”

Bess slipped the weave back into place and said, “No. I have come to an opinion, though. The decision will come after we talk about it.”

Stone shook his head and said, “I’ll listen, but I can’t see a way to get Marina no matter what we do. You’re the only one who has a chance, so it’ll depend on what you think you can make work. What’s your thinking?”

“Everything I’ve read about the Kish portrays them as fanatics. They’re smart, dedicated, violent, and sold out to this anti-female philosophy in a major way. Even if I’m stronger than Lord Kish, and I’m beginning to doubt that I would be based on the strength of the mages I’m sensing, then I can’t fight him directly as the mages around him would readily give him control of their aether if he needed it to beat me, or any attack from Tarlonin.

“He doesn’t have enough to push our fleet into an attack, so I suspect he’s not got a battery of mages like this at Fort Kishton. I was focused on the battery when they changed shifts. At best, the mages controlling the pulse are mid-range, stronger than those in Tarlonin but weaker than even some of those here in Fort Karlton. While it puts Marina in greater danger, I think the only choice is for us to either take control of this battery or destroy it. A more knowledgable mage here, with the power at their disposal, would be able to track us the length and breadth of Kishmeld; we’d not escape.”

Nodding, Stone said, “OK, how do we do that?”

“We break in after the change of shift, take control of the battery, kill the opposition and then see if any of the mage-slaves they’re using want some payback.”

“Mage-slaves?”

“I think so. They’re packed in tight. Most are lying down and hardly move all day.”

“Efren?”

“He’ll have to come with us.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“Then it’s decided.”
